I joined the class of June 1960 during the senior year after having been part of the next class of January 1961 since Peterson elementary school, so I also keep in touch with the latter class. Following high school graduation, I attended the University of Chicago, graduating early, in 8/63 with a B.A. in Psychology. Along the way, I took one college year to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. I spent one year in graduate school at the U of C in biopsychology, doing some research on love feelings that eventually got published, so anyone wanting the secrets to love just call on me, LOL. However, I wasn't comfortable with that graduate program, and decided to make my parents happy and transfer to medicine so they would be able to say "our son, the doctor." I figured it was a chance to try out another exciting place, and managed to get into the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. By my second year, I was dating a pretty medical technology student named Ellen Borden, whom I was somehow wise enough to marry in 1968 after graduation, and to stick with a good thing, so we've been married now for 42 years. I was opposed to the war in Vietnam, and to assure an alternative to military service there, I decided to intern with the U.S. Public Health Service in New Orleans, which enabled me to find a further assignment with that service as an alternative to military duty. That assignment was as an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control, which sent me to Hawaii as my hardship duty! I have remained affiliated with the USPHS in the inactive reserve, in which I reached the equivalent of a Navy Captain, and occasionally take a short tour of active duty (the last two of which have been as a ship doctor). Hawaii was a hard place to leave, so I stayed to do a residency in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and to establish a rural family practice on the island of Kauai for ten years. I qualified in Family Medicine by passing the board exam, which I had to repeat every 6-7 years. My son, Daniel, and daughter, Tamara, were both born on Kauai. Ellen helped with the practice and did the lab work. In 1982, my family moved back to California, where I held a couple of public health positions over the next three years, followed by a short stint teaching family medicine to resident physicians. From 1986 through 2010, I worked at the nation's largest state hospital, including 14 years as its chief physician (in charge of medical services.) I have just retired from that place and am keeping busy heading a national AIDS prevention organization called Beyond AIDS, along with other activities at Loma Linda University. Since 1989, I've also been a member of a disaster medical assistance team, which sent me to places like the 9/11 World Trade Center recovery and Hurricanes Katrina and Ike. I'm trying to figure out what retired people are supposed to do and would welcome suggestions from those of you who have a little experience in that! Ellen and I have lived in Redlands, California since 1987. It's a town near San Bernardino (BTW, I noticed that name coming into view on the class home page animation), about halfway between Los Angeles and Palm Springs. Ellen had a second career as a school librarian and computer tech, and has also recently retired. Our son Daniel lives in Palo Alto (the Silicon Valley Mecca), and our daughter Tamara lives near us in Redlands. |
